WNY Pet Owner's Guide to Stress-Free Travel with Dogs

Traveling is exciting. Figuring out what to do with your dog while you're gone is not. For Western New York pet owners who fly out of Buffalo Niagara International Airport or Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport, the weeks leading up to a trip often involve more stress about the dog than about the actual travel.
This guide walks through everything you need to know to make your next trip easier on both you and your pet, from how to choose a boarding facility to what to pack and how to prepare your dog for their stay.
Start Planning Earlier Than You Think You Need To
The single biggest mistake WNY pet owners make when traveling is waiting too long to book boarding. Quality kennels like Evergreen Kennels in Batavia fill up quickly, especially around holidays, school vacation weeks, and summer travel season. If you're flying out of BUF or ROC and have a trip on the calendar, booking your boarding at the same time you book your flights is the smartest move you can make.
Evergreen Kennels' Batavia location is just 30 to 35 minutes from Buffalo Niagara Airport and roughly 40 minutes from Rochester's airport, making it one of the most strategically located boarding facilities in all of WNY for travelers using either airport.
What to Look for in a Boarding Facility
Not all kennels are created equal. When you're evaluating your options, there are a few key things to look for.
Facility Cleanliness and Design
The physical environment matters. Look for a facility with individual runs rather than open group pens, climate control, and proper lighting. Dogs do best when they have their own space while still being able to see and hear what's happening around them. Evergreen Kennels offers exactly this with indoor/outdoor individual runs, heated floors, air conditioning, and dedicated spaces for dogs and cats separately.
Staff Experience and Credentials
Who is actually taking care of your dog? At Evergreen Kennels, owner Bobby Vetere is a former Monroe County Sheriff's K-9 Deputy with professional training in dog handling and canine first aid. That's the kind of background that gives pet owners real confidence, not just reassurance.
Vaccine Requirements
A boarding facility that requires current vaccines is doing things correctly. Evergreen Kennels requires proof of rabies, distemper, and kennel cough for dogs, and rabies and distemper for cats, with records submitted by email before arrival. This protects every animal in the facility, including yours.
A Track Record in the Community
Longevity matters. Evergreen Kennels has been in operation for more than 34 years. That kind of tenure in the community is not achieved without consistently excellent care.
How to Prepare Your Dog for Their Stay
Even the most confident, social dog can feel unsettled in a new environment. A few small steps before boarding day can make a real difference in how your dog adjusts.
If your dog has never boarded before, consider doing a trial daycare visit before the first overnight stay. Getting comfortable with the facility, the smells, and the staff during a low-stakes day visit can make the first overnight much smoother.
Bring familiar items from home, including a favorite blanket or a well-worn toy. The scent of home is genuinely comforting for dogs. Just make sure any bedding you bring is machine washable, as kennels need to be able to launder it if needed.
Stick to your dog's normal feeding schedule as much as possible. Bring enough food for the entire stay, packed in a labeled container. Evergreen Kennels will follow your dog's regular feeding routine to keep things as consistent as possible.
Packing Checklist for Your Dog's Boarding Stay
Before drop-off, make sure you have the following ready: enough food in a labeled container for the full stay, any medications pre-loaded in a labeled pill box, current vaccine records emailed to the kennel in advance, machine-washable bedding or a comfort item from home, and a credit or debit card for payment since Evergreen Kennels does not accept cash or checks.
The Drop-Off and Pickup Routine
At Evergreen Kennels' Batavia location, pickup and drop-off hours are Monday through Friday 9 AM to 4 PM, Saturday 3 PM to 5 PM, and Sunday 9 AM to 11 AM. If you're flying out of Buffalo early in the morning, a drop-off the evening before followed by a Sunday morning pickup on the return trip fits neatly into a weekend travel schedule.
If you pick up your dog before 11 AM Monday through Friday on the day of checkout, no boarding fee applies for that day. Pickups after 11 AM on weekdays do carry a fee. At the Batavia location, Saturday pickups also carry a boarding fee for that day.
